Vishu is one of the most important festivals of Kerala. It is celebrated on the first day of Malayalam month of Medam (usually April 14th), which is the astronomical New Year Day. As per popular belief, the fortune of that year is based on the object they see first on this particular day. So the first thing people see on Vishu, the 'Vishukkani'(the lucky sight or gift) is decisive to the year's prosperity. Thus the 'Vishukkani' has over the years become a ritual arrangement of auspicious articles like raw rice, fresh linen, golden cucumber, betel leaves, arecanut, metal mirror, the yellow flowers 'konna', and a holy text and coins, in a bell metal vessel called 'uruli' is placed before the statue of God Shree Krishna, A lighted bell metal lamp called nilavilakku is also placed alongside.

Vishu 2026 falls on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. It marks Medam 1 in the Malayalam solar calendar — the moment the Sun enters Mesha Rashi (Aries), known as Mesha Sankranthi. The exact Sankranthi moment occurs at 9:39 AM IST on April 14, 2026.
Note on dates: Some panchangams (notably those used in Thrissur) list Vishu Kani Puja day as April 15, 2026, because the Sankranthi moment falls before noon on April 14 — so the actual Vishukkani viewing ritual on the morning before sunrise will be observed on April 14 in most of Kerala.

Vishukkani — The First Sight
The heart and main part of Vishu celebrations is the Vishukkani (literally, "that which is seen first on Vishu"). The Malayalam belief is simple and beautiful: whatever you see first on Vishu morning shapes the fortune of your entire year. So Malayalis ensure the very first sight is one of abundance, beauty, and divinity.
Typically, the eldest woman of the household — the mother or grandmother — prepares the Vishukkani the night before and leads family members to view it at dawn, with eyes closed until they stand before it. The arrangement is set in an uruli (a wide bell-metal vessel) near the family prayer room, alongside a lit nilavilakku (traditional lamp).

How to Prepare Vishukkani at Home (Step-by-Step)
- 1. Choose a clean, sacred spot — preferably near the puja room or family altar. Clean and decorate with fresh flowers.
- 2. Place the uruli centrally — fill it with raw rice as a base, then arrange the coconut, fruits, betel leaves, and arecanut around the Krishna idol.
- 3. Add Kani Konna flowers — these vivid yellow flowers are the signature of Vishu. Drape them generously over the arrangement.
- 4. Place gold, coins, and the mirror — gold and silver items represent wealth; the mirror reflects back auspicious sights.
- 5. Light the nilavilakku — using sesame oil or coconut oil, light the brass lamp. The warm glow sets the sacred atmosphere.
- 6. Keep the room dark the night before — family members must not see the arrangement before morning.
- 7. Lead family to view it at dawn — elders guide each member with eyes covered, to open them only before the Kani.
Vishukkaineettam — The Gift of Blessings
After viewing the Vishukkani, elders hand out Vishukkaineettam — gifts of money to younger family members, children, servants, and tenants. Traditionally, this was gold coins placed within the Vishukkani itself; today it is commonly currency notes, though the spiritual intent remains unchanged: it is a blessing, not merely a gift.
Many families still include at least a few coins blessed overnight within the Kani arrangement, which are then distributed as part of Kaineettam. Children eagerly await this ritual — it is the Vishu equivalent of receiving gifts on Christmas morning.
Vishu Sadhya
No Vishu is complete without the Vishu Sadhya — a grand vegetarian feast served on fresh banana leaves. Unlike the elaborate 26-course Onam Sadhya, the Vishu Sadhya tends to be slightly simpler but no less flavorful. Many Kerala households also include non-vegetarian dishes on Vishu.
The feast is a philosophical statement: it brings together all six tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter, spicy, and astringent — representing the full spectrum of life's experiences that the new year will bring.
